Educating for Democracy in the Digital Age (EDDA)—a partnership between Oakland Unified School District (OUSD), Mills College, and the National Writing Project—is a digital civics initiative that launched in 2012 with the support of the S.D. Bechtel Jr. Foundation and the MacArthur Foundation.
The goal of EDDA is to bring high quality civic learning and digital media literacy learning opportunities to all OUSD high school students. The initiative reflects the need to support all young people to be informed and effective civic actors who contribute to a vibrant, healthy democracy and who are prepared to confront the challenges of the 21st Century. The EDDA initiative has significantly expanded the opportunity structure for civic learning and engagement in OUSD. It began with 28 teachers and has grown to over 100 teachers from 12 high schools in Oakland who are now providing digital literacy and civic learning opportunities as part of the standard curriculum. With the support of the Thomas J. Long Foundation, EDDA is poised to for institutionalization – developing a district-wide opportunity structure that enables all students in OUSD to become skilled, thoughtful, and engaged community members who are able to leverage the tools of the digital age to tackle relevant issues.
